Sophie and Carter

Sophie and Carter - Chelsea Fine 3.5 starsI really liked this... I know that 3.5 stars might not make you think that, but I did. It's always hard with novellas for me though. You're kind of plopped into the middle of what's going on and have to go from there. We first meet Sophie and Carter at high school - they don't interact though, instead they kind of ignore each other at school finding it easier to keep that part of their life separate from their harsh realities. I really enjoyed both Sophie and Carter in this short story. They are both dealing with some very heavy issues in their lives and with graduation around the corner they are both looking forward to being able to make something of themselves. Carter's mom is a bit on the crazy side after years of abuse by her husband, and Carter took his share of the abuse as well. Sophie is raising her siblings "the littles" on her own at the age of 18 because her mother just can't be bothered. Not exactly ideal for these teens and they've had to grow up very quickly.Although Sophie and Carter are only neighbors they end their days with each other sitting on Sophie's porch... Simply reconnecting with each other and offering the necessary support to push through the next day and the next. I really liked their friendship. No questions asked they were there for each other no matter what. Despite all the ugly they had to deal with, there was this beauty in the relationship they had with each other.Like I said, I really liked this, but it's hard for me to rate novellas, if you're looking for something quick with some wonderfully written characters this might just be perfect for you.
